Are unsplash images free to use?

Are unsplash images Free to Use?

Many people who create digital content would like to use good quality images, but are often limited due to the cost. Thankfully, with the advent of Unsplash images, it is now possible to access high-quality images completely free of cost.

Unsplash is a collection of over 160,000 photographs licensed under Creative Commons Zero (CC0), which means they are completely free to use, adapt and modify without attribution or royalties. All photographs released by Unsplash are public domain and you can be confident that you will not be violating any copyright laws.

Most of Unsplash's photos are contributed by volunteer photographers who want to share their work with anyone that needs images for their project. As such, most commercial uses of the photos can be undertaken with no charge or requirement for attribution - although it is polite if you do attribute them anyway! The photos can also be used in any other manner imaginable; from creating artwork for print and web newsletters, creating templates for websites, or even just as a personal decoration on your work computer background screen.

As amazing as this sounds there is one caveat: If you are using an image from Unsplash for a commercial purpose then it could still be subject to copyright restrictions if it contains private property (such as a building or landscape) or copyrighted works (such as artwork). In addition, if you make significant changes to an image that was not taken by you then attribution must be given or else you will be infringing on another photographer's rights. As such it is always important to double check beforehand that no such restrictions apply before using an image from Unsplash in a commercial project.
