What is gematria?

gematria is a mystical numerical code used by some Jewish scholars to help interpret the Hebrew Bible, Torah and other ancient texts. The code assigns numerical values to the letters of the Hebrew alphabet; each letter then carries a particular weight and meaning. For example, in Kabbalistic teachings, the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet ('aleph) has a numeric value of one, while the last letter (tav) has a numeric value of 400.

Jewish Gematria assigns special significance to these numbers and seeks to uncover hidden messages or divine wisdom within them. By combining or breaking down words or passages using different numerical combinations, scholars can gain insight into various passages from texts such as the Old Testament and Talmud.

Gematria can also be applied in modern times by assigning numbers to words or phrases in order to uncover deeper meanings or associations. For instance, some Israeli politicians have used Gematria to come up with campaign slogans or rally cries that carry an additional message beyond what is seen on paper.

How does gematria work?

Gematria is an ancient form of numerology that contains powerful insights into language, numerology, and spirituality. It's a practice that has been around for centuries and is still used today in many different cultures for divination and meditation. What exactly is Gematria? Let's take a look at how it works.

Gematria is the study of assigning numbers to words or phrases in order to uncover hidden meaning or symbolism. Every letter of the Hebrew or Greek alphabet is assigned a numerical value, with the final value for a word or phrase being the sum of these values. For example, using Hebrew gematria, the word "Bethlehem" (בית לחם) would total 29 (2 + 10 + 8 + 5 + 40 + 30 + 10).

Using this system of assigning numbers to words each letter contains certain characteristics which can be used to uncover deeper meaning. For example, representing one's faith may include the words Elohim (אלוהים), which equals 86 (1+30+5+10+40+1), while pride may be represented by Lucifer (לושיה), which adds up to 358 (30+6+10+300+10). All words have a numerical score according to their Gematria and the combinations of letters used can be used to understand one's purpose or fate based on those meanings.

Another popular use for gematria is its application in gematrical puzzles—these are puzzles where glyphs or symbols are presented with their corresponding numerical values and it's up to you to determine what words could correspond with them. The numerical value of gems has also been used in jewellery design as each type of stone has a specific number that helps create symbolic meanings for each piece.
